Airbnb camera and noise monitor rules for hosts

Cameras and noise monitors can feel like a sensible safeguard, but Airbnb has specific rules on what hosts may use, and breaking them can put your listing at risk. This is a summary of the rules as Airbnb publishes them; read the Help Centre page before installing anything.

Cameras

  • Indoor security cameras are not allowed in listings, even if they are switched off.
  • Hidden cameras are prohibited.
  • Exterior cameras are allowed if you disclose them, including the device, where it is placed and whether it is on or off.

Disclosure goes in the listing under Guest safety, in the safety devices section, so guests can see it before they book.

Noise decibel monitors

Noise monitors that measure decibel levels are allowed indoors if you disclose them, and only in common areas. They cannot be placed in bedrooms, bathrooms or sleeping areas, and they must not record audio. Airbnb says these rules took effect on April 30, 2024.

What to do in practice

  1. Check your listing for any device you already use, and confirm each is allowed.
  2. Remove any indoor camera, even one that is switched off.
  3. Disclose exterior cameras and noise monitors in your listing.
  4. Mention them in your house rules and pre-arrival message so there are no surprises.
  5. Review the Help Centre page periodically, since rules can change.

Alternatives that stay within the rules

A noise monitor is only one tool. Clear quiet hours, a firm guest count and fast messaging do most of the work; see our guide on noise complaints and party prevention. For access control without cameras, smart locks give you entry logs and code control.

Local law may add its own rules on recording devices, so check what applies where your property is.
